Holistic Healing Part 2

Bill Mathews - Friday, January 28, 2011

Last month we talked about the four legs of a stool representing your health and the importance of balance. I covered the chemical (nutritional) and structural “legs” of the stool. Continuing the analogy, our last two legs consist of energetic and emotional balance.

Energetic Healing

Energy medicine’ as it is being called is seeing resurgence in interest in all types of practitioners. Unfortunately I believe it is one the more misunderstood aspects of health. Of course the concept of this type of treatment is accepted in the form of acupuncture which works on the pathways of electrical stimuli called ‘Meridians’. Remember that your brain is generating bio-electrical signals all the time. Think of your body as an electrical panel and the circuit breakers are trigger/acupuncture points and the electrical circuits are the meridians feeding the rest of the body. Without good communication along these circuits you have an imbalance electrically and loss or impaired function of tissue, glands or organs. The actual science of how it works is much more complicated but I think this is a good start to basic understanding.

There are many ways to influence the electrical system in your body. It can be altered with needles on certain points, it can be altered chemically and it can be altered with another electrical field. This last one is “outside the box” of conventional thinking but easily demonstrated with measurable results. It is harder to explain but when I see a client in my clinic they ‘get it’ once were done. I pay close attention to what your body tells me electrically. The kinesthetic testing I do relies on the electrical circuits and trigger points to tell me what is going on to cause the problems you may be having.

I’ve mentioned this before but it is worth repeating, the body never lies. If you know how to read the body and have the tools to interpret it correctly a practitioner can identify the imbalances that may be causing your health problems and make appropriate recommendations to correct them.

Emotional Healing

When I talk about emotional balance with my clients you can almost see the walls going up. The concept of how emotions play a part in health is understood and is readily accepted as a contributor to poor health. But if they do not want to address emotional pain or traumas then really there is nothing that I can do. This is one area that requires complete participation from the client.

I can demonstrate to my clients that emotions are influencing their health and may be blocking their ability to heal completely, and then outline several different tools to help correct it. One of those tools is a process called Rapid Eye Therapy available at the clinic. I have seen this used for phobias, bad habits, and emotional traumas of all types and personally witnessed truly impressive results.

The brain is incredibly complex and subject to bad programming like your computer. And being the brain it is in charge of the rest of the body. If you have stored anger, grief, fear or emotional problems do you really think you will be completely healthy?

Rapid Eye Therapy

Rapid Eye Therapy (RET) assists in releasing trapped trauma, stress, negative patterns and limiting beliefs and replaces these with positive mental programming. The way it works is kind of like how you would change bad programming in your computer. You remove the bad line of type causing the problem and replace it with the correct instructions, reboot your system and miraculously, no more problems. RET works that quickly and completely if you are honestly wanting to correct the problem. It does this by simulating REM sleep which is the bodies’ natural way to process stress. You are completely awake and interacting with the therapist.

In a typical session the practitioner will use an eye directing device and guided imagery and positive affirmations and statements to affect change. Old stored memories and traumas are released and replaced quickly without having to re-live the situation that caused the trauma.

More information can be seen on our web site that may help to understand RET better if you have the interest. I cannot encourage you enough though that if childhood traumas, anger problems, post traumatic stress and a host of other similar issues is playing a part in your life, and you want to change it, Rapid Eye Therapy may just be the answer for you.

I want to share this final thought with you. Thought is energy and what we believe and put energy into will manifest into our lives. When you combine all four of the areas of health and balance we’ve discussed in these two articles into an overall program of health, success is just around the corner.

Holistic Healing 101 Part 1

Bill Mathews - Friday, January 28, 2011

There seems to be a significant amount of misunderstanding what holistic healing is all about. In a two part article I would like to explain what you should expect from a holistic healing practitioner and the type of treatment you should be getting.

If you take the example of a four legged stool and each one of those legs represents an aspect of your health: chemical (nutritional), emotional, energetic and structural and each of those legs are balanced and strong then you have optimal health. If on the other hand you have an imbalance in one or more of these legs then the stool is out of balance. A true holistic approach will address all of these facets of health to ensure you are getting the best recommendations possible for your body to heal itself. And this is critical: no matter how talented the practitioner claims to be they will not heal you. You must heal yourself. Claims of being able to “heal you” from any alternative care giver is arrogant in my opinion, and false advertising at the least. At the Ki Center we give you what your body needs based on extensive testing to bring your body back into balance.  Our immune systems were designed to be absolutely top notch at achieving and maintaining health. Many factors have served to compromise that system both in humans and animals. More on that later but for now let’s look at the four factors responsible for health and how to make them better.

Chemical Imbalance

The nutritional leg is the nuts and bolts of your body function. It is responsible for all the factory processes that take place inside you. Everything from hormone production to tissue repair requires nutrients, vitamins, minerals and a thousand other factors to keep the body going on a daily basis. Without the proper materials the factory can’t produce the end product that being healthy body function. When I test the body for deficiencies I’m looking for missing or depleted pieces of this chemical mix. Once replaced the body will start the repair process, slowly at first but it will within 2-3 months get back in balance nutritionally and many of those nagging symptoms will go away. I have used whole food nutritional products, glandular extracts, herbs and just plain old life style changes to achieve this. Chemical fractions of synthetic nutrients won’t give you long term results only short term relief if you’re lucky.

Structural Balance

Another leg on our stool is structure. If your frame is out of alignment, in other words your back is out or there is some part of the bone structure not aligned right then you have a structural imbalance. Lot’s of folks go to the chiropractor for regular adjustments. This is fine but if you are not holding your adjustments and you have to get the same thing fixed each time then something else is contributing to your problem. Is it a chemical component? Perhaps you are experiencing stress which is keeping you from relaxing and in turn tightens the muscles which shifts the bone. Nerves branch out from the spinal cord that carry messages for digestion and organ function. If you have vertebrae out of alignment and it is pinching the nerve then those messages can’t get through or are scrambled, possibly causing digestive problems or a host of other problems. And it can work in reverse as well. Chronic digestive problems will cause problems in structure as well. You can see by these few examples that it all fits together like a puzzle and for your sake please choose a health care practitioner that can see the connections.

All of these four legs are connected and are necessary for balance and health. If you address just one of them and ignore the rest you will not get complete healing. A true holistic approach will look at all of the pieces of the puzzle to achieve balance and allow you to heal yourself. If the practitioner you are seeing can’t take care of all of these areas of health they should at least be able to identify what is missing and keeping you from optimal health and make recommendations to correct it.

Next month I will talk about the energetic and emotional aspects to overall health which in my observation is vastly overlooked in helping people to heal completely. At the Ki Center we look at and test for imbalances in all four of these areas of health. In a nut shell what you will get is a way to improve your health by re-establishing your immune system to it’s most effective and efficient level of operation. We do this by giving the body what it needs and individualizing your care to correct the cause of the problem not just chase after symptoms.

Organic Stem Cell Therapy

Bill Mathews - Wednesday, January 12, 2011

I believe that stem cell therapy will provide the opportunity to see near miraculous health benefits in the near future. If the moral implications, logistics and negative public sentiment can be worked out, this therapy, I believe, will show great promise for otherwise untreatable conditions.

The idea that stem cells can be introduced into the body, and then transform into specific building blocks of nerve tissue, organ tissue or whatever the body needs to heal and rebuild, is exciting to say the least. Early research has shown that stem cell therapy can work.

Organic Stem Cells

Yet even before stem cells research, our bodies already contained the genetic blueprint in the cell nucleus for repair and re-growth. When this blueprint goes awry, our immune system overreacts with the end result of autoimmune disease and even early death. These tiny specks of life are called protomorphogens (PMGs), and are the blueprint skeletons for regeneration of tissue. PMGs accomplish this feat by actually helping in the construction of chromosomes, the final blueprint of life itself.

Early in the twentieth century, Dr. Royal Lee, the founder of Standard Process products, found that he could actually gather PMGs from the glands and organs of other mammals. He engineered a process to gather these cells and manufacture supplements that the human body could use. To my knowledge there is no other company that can duplicate this process.

Through the use of these PMGs, specific gland and organ tissue extracts can be used to help the body recover and rebuild new tissue and help the healing process. In the purest sense, we have at our disposal organic stem cell therapy. In addition to tissue repair, these products are extremely supportive to our immune system.

Auto Immune Disease

When the immune system goes haywire, autoimmune diseases are the result. The body will produce natural tissue antibodies or NTAs that turn on the body and cause disease and illness. A certain amount of these NTAs are necessary for normal body repair, however when gone unchecked, they can and will cause damage. Unfortunately, at this time western medicine has few treatment options short of powerful and sometimes harmful drugs.

Enter in PMGs and their natural ability to normalize and strengthen our immune system and correct specific gland and organ tissue imbalance. They do this by stabilizing the production of natural tissue antibodies. Therefore, PMGs are critical in the fight against autoimmune problems.

Most allergies are the result of over production of NTAs which cause an adverse production of histamine in the body. When protomorphogens are used, an over reactive immune system—an over production of NTAs, can be stabilized and reduced. This means that PMGs can help you reduce the pain of autoimmune disease and help correct allergies.

By “borrowing” PMGs from other mammals, incorporating them into supplements that contain the raw materials (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc.) for healing and growth, Dr. Lee was able to demonstrate that these specific supplements could help people heal when no other treatments were effective. The discovery of PMGs was not well understood, but further research and study found them similar to stem cells. Remember that stem cells can reproduce into any type of cell. PMGs are specific to the target tissue, gland or organ. Whereas stem cells are “blank” blueprints, PMGs are directed to their specific target—kidney to kidney, thyroid to thyroid and brain to brain etc.

When we supply the appropriate PMG in a supplement form with all the synergists and vital whole food nutrients, your body begins to heal itself. You are the only one that heals your body. No doctor, medical procedure or medication does that for you. It can help, but ultimately you are the true healer.

Traditional Medicine

Traditional medicine had a brief foray into PMG therapy which was called oral tolerance therapy. This therapy introduced bits of raw gland into the body and then the targeted gland or organ was observed for changes. Positive response was noted by experts including those at Johns Hopkins University. This therapy was crude at best and was soon replaced by pharmaceutical medications.

Dr. Lee found however, that manufacturing PMGs in their natural state delivered a far superior form of “organic stem cell therapy” which bypasses the stomach and goes directly to the intestines for metabolism and uptake.

True clinical nutrition works effectively in the body. It is safe and provides the body with the building blocks to heal. Many of the supplements I use in the clinic contain PMGs along with their synergists. In my opinion, this is truly cutting edge technology that has great promise and a good track record for effectiveness.

Holistic Anatomy

Bill Mathews - Wednesday, December 29, 2010

What does ‘holistic’ mean, anyway? The dictionary says that it is pertaining to totality, or to the whole. From my point of view when applied to the practice of holistic healing, it means that we view our clients as unique individuals, and as such, each is more than a collection of glands, organs or tissue, or a group of symptoms. All areas of our bodies are intimately connected. They work together as a whole for our physical, spiritual and emotional well being.

Synergy of Body Systems

When evaluating a new client, I always look at all aspects of their health. As an example, if someone is concerned about chronic back pain, there can be associated digestive or emotional issues that may contribute to the pain. A person may go in for regular chiropractic adjustments to treat the same problem area over and over. A poor digestive system can cause referred pain to the middle of the back, make muscles tight, and in the process put strain on the vertebrae. The person can certainly get repeat adjustments, but if the digestive problem persists, then the possibility of recurring back problems is pretty high.

It can work in reverse as well. Chronic digestive problems can cause a host of symptoms, including upper- to mid-back pain. So which caused which? It really doesn’t matter; as long as you check both and fix what you find, you’ve covered all the bases.

We know that nerve bundles and branches originating from the spinal cord feed the entire body with nerve tissue. The nerve bundle that comes out near the fourth thoracic vertebrae (T4) provides the nerve to the gallbladder. So if there is a digestive problem stemming from the gallbladder, you can have back pain between the shoulder blades. The reverse is true in that, chronic back pain in the T4 area can affect the function of the gallbladder, hence digestive problems.

It’s easy to see the correlation between nerve function and organ function. But from a holistic view, muscles in the body have a connection to body systems and organs as well.

If we take the example of low back pain, and understand the function and placement of muscles that stabilize the low back, we can then get a much clearer picture of the whole as it applies to low back pain.

Narrowing it Down

The three primary muscles I look at in low back pain are the Piriformis muscle, Quadratus Lumborum and the Sacrospinalis. The Piriformis is a small muscle that attaches to the top of the leg bone and to the back part of the pelvis. It helps stabilize the fifth lumbar vertebrae, and two of the small bones of the sacrum. It is also associated with the circulation sex meridian (from acupuncture) and has an organ association of the reproductive organs and hormone imbalance. Furthermore, the nutritional deficiencies of vitamin A and hormone precursors can cause a weakness in this muscle. So if you have a chronic low back, then further investigation is warranted to determine the cause of the problem. Another potential aggravator for low back pain can be from an emotional point of reference. Holistic principles, when it comes to physical well being, suggests that a feeling of fear about financial security can contribute to symptoms in this area of the body. Again, we look at all aspects of the whole person, honor what the body is trying to tell us, and then fix what we find.

If we take a closer look at the Sacrospinalis muscle, that is the one that runs the length of the spine and connects the vertebrae and ribs all the way from the pelvis up. It can cause some low back problems as well as imbalances in the bladder. The nutrition associated with this muscle is vitamins A, C, E, P and calcium. So deficiencies in this area can also contribute to the problem. You can see that there can be much more to low back problems than just a chiropractic adjustment. Evaluating the totality of the person is essential to find the cause of the problem, and thus, eliminating the symptoms. I can hope that some day, holistic approaches to health care will become the norm and not just a fringe modality to healing.

Healing and the Human Spirit

Bill Mathews - Wednesday, December 29, 2010

As we begin a new year we will be faced with new challenges, new decisions and ultimately new choices for ourselves and possibly for others as well. Hopefully these choices will be opportunities for growth and to better our lives. There will be challenges that we have no control over but still leave us with choices that can alter our lives significantly. The beauty of choice is that if we do not like the choice we made then we have the right and the ability to choose again.

The Ki Center has been open for a year in its present location in Gresham. During this time I have observed some remarkable healings take place. People with long term medical problems have gotten better and some are completely healed. Nothing I have done can compare with the one dynamic that is essential to wellness and that I have no control over. When people make a choice to get better and are willing to do what it takes to make it happen, there is nothing that can get in their way.

Alternative and Traditonal Medicine

I have had the opportunity to review many studies published by various medical organizations both traditional and alternative. The interesting thing about studies is that no matter what the subject matter and depending on your intended goal, you can hire someone to say whatever you need and tailor the report to fit your marketing needs. There is one variable however in all of these reports that cannot be factored in or defined by any scientific means. It cannot be compartmentalized by formulas or chemical description. It defies definition by Western medicine and is so wildly unpredictable that it often times is ignored in the whole process of getting well. That variable is the power of the human spirit.

I am sure you have heard stories of people making remarkable recoveries from cancer, debilitating injuries and extreme mental problems that defied the medical establishments’ ability to explain it. On the reverse we have seen people who ultimately just give up and by all rights and medical convention should have gotten better but didn’t. The difference of course is the individual. What choices did they make? What part of their mental attitude made them dig their heels in and refuse to give up? I don’t need a medical definition to realize that the human spirit can and will perform miracles all the time.

My mother always used to tell me that I can do anything if I just put my mind to it. How true this has become for not only me but hundreds of ailing clients over the past year.

Past Experiences

l'll share one experience with you of a client who was experiencing a terrible case of psoriasis. I followed all the usual holistic approaches to helping this person. Dealt with the detoxification issues, supported the liver and skin and addressed the digestive problems associated with this terrible condition. From an alternative approach you must remember that psoriasis is a symptom and not a stand alone disease. We were able to get some relief right away and a significant amount of improvement in the physical symptoms but it would keep flaring up and would never go away completely. For those of you familiar with this problem you know the amount of mental anguish that these people can go through. Once the emotional component was targeted and she was able to feel better emotionally as well as physically her attitude and her spirit was super charged. She had been having problems with this condition for over twenty years and once she saw light at the end of the tunnel her own body, with the help of good nutritional tools and Rapid Eye Therapy made the connection to achieve balance and she got well.

It took about six months to get to this point of her skin being clear and to be sure we came across some hurdles and bumps in the road. The amazing thing about this story is that before coming to the Ki Center she had been working with a research Dermatologist who of course was going through several different medications both approved and experimental. Nothing seemed to work however until natural protocols were used to bring her back into balance chemically and Rapid Eye Therapy was used to bring emotional balance.

None of this could have been accomplished if she had not made the conscious choice to get better. She choose to make changes in her life and once she saw physical improvement her mental attitude, her spirit if you will, was determined to be healthy and she would not settle for anything less. And it worked.

I would like to wish you all the best for the New Year and offer you a challenge. If you don’t like where you are at in your life right now then please choose again, it’s your right.

Truth in Advertising….Really?

Tyler Wall - Monday, December 06, 2010

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could have a lie detector attached to all advertising and marketing programs? How often do we see a new product come out only to find out within a short time that the information was biased or embellished or just flat wrong? Buyer beware has been an old metaphor for quite some time, but when it comes to the really important things—like your health, consumers shouldn’t have to second guess the safety of these products.

If you watch the news you probably are aware that the drug Avandia, a potent diabetes drug, has been recently called into question as to its safety. In fact, Avandia and several other diabetes drugs are now on the hot seat for their contribution to heart attack and stroke–the very thing the drug makers say will be prevented by taking their drugs. It’s interesting to note that Avandia has made billions in profit over the time it has been on the market. There have also been over ten thousand law suits levied against its maker Glaxo, who is now reportedly paying 460 million dollars to settle these suits. It turns out that Glaxo failed to give the FDA a study that showed that Avandia may cause heart attacks.

The same could be said for reports and studies on nutritional supplements. A lot of money has been poured into the supplement industry, both in marketing and testing for effectiveness against illness and injury. Depending on the agency that is doing the testing, and their reason for the study, you can get a wide variety of results. It can be frustrating to hear that vitamin E shows promise in supporting muscle and nerve pain one week from one study, and then the next week you hear from another study that vitamin E hasn’t improved health in the test group. Again, it depends on the agency doing the study and the motivation behind the information. Additionally, these studies never use whole food organic products in their testing. Synthetic, chemically produced supplements are the standard for these studies, and speaking from over ten years of experience, the results will never be as accurate unless true whole food phytonutrients are used.

Too many short cuts, both in manufacturing and testing plague big pharmaceutical companies. Profit is the Holy Grail for these folks instead of real health care, and we are paying the price in dollars and declining health.

Supplements and drugs aside, what about your trip to the grocery store? Organic, certified organic or all natural products are out there but what does that actually mean? Organic should mean that the product was manufactured without chemical processing. That the growing of the food was done without chemical fertilizers, the soil has been tested and is complete in its mineral and nutrient balance. Hand weeding, hand picking—the works. If you go the local farmers market, you would assume that these foods have been produced in an organic fashion, right? Not always the case though. If a company says that their product is “certified organic” that means that for several years, and with government oversight, that the farmers’ soil and end product have been extensively and consistently tested for “organic” growing practices over time. Once this has been done, then, the company can call their product “certified organic”.

What about the phrase “All Natural”? How does that play into our choices of food or products? My understanding is that if a company uses anything from a “natural” source, no matter how much or how little, they can, by definition say that their product contains all natural products. I feel that this is an embellishment on the truth and misleading. A good example of this is vitamin C with rose hips. Go to any store and find a bottle of all natural vitamin C with rose hips and look at the label. You will see a thousand to two thousand milligrams of Ascorbic Acid and a smattering of rose hips for marketing hyperbole. But they get to call it “all natural” because of the labeling laws from the FDA.

My best advice is this: If you need an encyclopedia to read a label, chances are you are buying chemicals and highly processed non-foods. The first ingredient on a label is usually the most prevalent. Become ardent readers of labels and know what you are buying. If you want real food, with real nutrients that work to advance your health, buy organic, certified organic or even grow your own if you can. And as far as supplementation goes, most are synthetic chemical fractions and a waste of money. True organically grown, nutritionally dense supplementation containing all of the phytonutrients found in nature is available.

Vitamin K2

Tyler Wall - Thursday, November 25, 2010

Vitamin K2

You probably have never heard of vitamin K2. Most people haven’t, but the need for this vitamin activator is very important.

Essentially, vitamin K2 is a nutritional complex that activates vitamin’s A, D and the mineral calcium. If you are thinking bone health, osteoporosis and joint problems, then you are right on track. K2 is part of the vitamin K complex in the category known as quinones. Vitamin K1, known as phylloquinone, is found in the green parts of plants and is commonly recognized to help in blood clotting. Vitamin K2 is primarily used by the body to put calcium where it belongs, in the bones and teeth. It also prevents calcium from going where it doesn’t belong, such as the eyes (cataracts), kidney (kidney stones), arteries (arteriosclerosis), and in the soft tissues of the joints (arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis). K2 is also very important for brain and nervous system health.

Way back in 1945 the brilliant researcher and scientist Weston A. Price found the highest concentration of K2 in milk of certain animals that ate rapidly growing green grasses, in the organs and fat of certain animals and in the eggs and liver of fish. He called the substance Activator X, as the vitamin K complex wasn’t really identified at that time. Since then, however, vitamin K2 has been established as being that same Activator X identified so long ago.

Since the foods listed as having this important complex are not exactly a dietary staple, there are supplement forms available. Unfortunately, the supplement industry in general has lost much of its credibility. There have been too many wild claims of miracle cures, poor regulation of manufacturing and labeling and out and out fraud. The only way to get K2 through supplementation is with cod liver oil and butter oil. Whole food sources are best, but whole food nutritional oils are hard to come by and expensive. Fortunately, there are two products that are of the highest quality and a whole food source. They are Blue Ice High Vitamin Cod Liver Oil, and X-Factor Gold High Vitamin Butter Oil. Both of these products are available on line. Just put in the name of these products in your search engine and you will find suppliers.

Why is this vitamin so important? In past articles I have discussed the importance and efficacy of essential fats in your diet. What you will get from these products are high quality omega 3 and omega 6 fats in the proper ratio. These are essential for bone health, joint pain and controlling inflammation. There has been so much mis-information about fats, both good and bad, that people in general seem to shy away from foods that contain this nutrient.

If you are taking blood thinners, and your doctor has warned you about taking vitamin K (blood clotting), it does not mean you do not need this critical vitamin. Fortunately, according to the research, butter oil will not trigger a powerful blood clotting response and in most cases will be perfectly safe, even if you are on blood thinners.

Researchers in the holistic and nutritional fields have found that the combination of the two–cod liver oil and butter oil—provide a better balance of nutrients than just taking one supplement alone.

If you are suffering from chronic joint pain, arthritis, or degenerative physical problems, nervous system problems or hormone imbalances, then this combination of nutrients may be just the ticket for you. When you combine these two products with other whole food concentrates like we use in the clinic, you have a powerful tool to accomplish the healing your body is designed to do. And since these oil products are mineral activators, you can super charge your protocol of bone health and joint repair.

There has been a wonderful response from my readers indicating their disappointment that I wouldn’t be writing this column in the Gazette any more. Thank you for the phone calls and words of encouragement. Following this response, I have worked out an arrangement with the Gazette to continue writing for a time. As I mentioned last month, my column together with an archive of past subjects is now available on my web site, along with a blog (yes, I have joined the 21st century) that will have a more personal feel to it. Feel free to post any comments you may have directly on the blog site. Thanks again for your support and readership.

Weight Loss and Hormones

Unhealthy Weight Loss Can Hurt

For anyone that has tried to loose weight, tried all the fad diets, ate like a bird and became a gym junkie but still has not been able to loose weight, then this column is for you.

Nothing can be more frustrating then to do everything you are supposed to do and still not be successful with weight loss. It becomes a point of “what’s the use” when no matter what you do, nothing seems to change. May I suggest to you, that you may have a hormonal imbalance that is keeping the weight on? Or perhaps your digestion is such that no matter what you eat, it just goes to your waist. I can tell you that there is hope.

Estrogen is a fat storage hormone, and by that I mean if there is an imbalance in your estrogen levels, then your body will hold onto the extra weight, and this applies to men as well. That belly fat you can’t seem to shake can possibly be attributed to estrogen overload, which can disrupt your thyroid function as well. I have many women that come to me already on some form of hormone replacement therapy. Many of them are taking “bio-identical hormones” made from plant sterols. And although these types of hormones are safer than the horse based hormones (remember Premarin?) they still have their problems.

Humans require fat and cholesterol to manufacture hormones in the body. When you replace this function with plant based “bio-identical hormones” the body still is imbalanced, unless of course you are a vegetable. I haven’t seen any carrots walking into my office lately so I will assume we need to base our evaluation on human anatomy and physiology. I will use advanced muscle testing techniques to determine whether you have a hormonal imbalance or not. I believe that saliva testing is an accurate source of information as well, but the bottom line here is determining whether there is an imbalance. I do not need to know the exact amounts of each hormone in the body, just that there is an imbalance, once that is known, repairing the problem is pretty straight forward.

The nutritional and glandular products I use to correct these kinds of problems are based on human DNA and physiology. If you give the tools (nutrients, enzymes, minerals etc.) the body needs, it can identify and use these nutrients to manufacture and regulate hormone production, then balance can be achieved and normal body function, including weight loss, can happen. Once the hormone balance is achieved, then we will reevaluate your diet, and exercise and lifestyle issues that may be contributing to weight gain. But if your body is holding onto too much estrogen, then exercise and diet alone will not get the results you want.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the emotional aspect of weight loss as well. I have found a correlation of the weight as being a “protective layer” for some. No matter what they may do to eliminate the excess pounds, the body can hold onto this protective layer until the emotional issue can be resolved. Again, using advanced muscle testing techniques, and good history taking, emotional problems can be identified and rapid eye therapy can be used to get rid of these self limiting belief systems.

Healthy Weight Loss

Healthy weight loss is about two to three pounds a week. Any more than that and you may be just shedding water. And please do not use the scales to determine your success. Look instead to the mirror, and your clothes. How do you look? Do your clothes feel looser on you? These are good indicators of sensible weight loss or gain. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat. When you exercise you will add muscle weight, but inches will disappear.

There can be many impediments to weight loss. It is a good idea to explore the holistic side of your health concerns as this can identify something as simple as a compromised digestive system which can keep the weight on.

If you are looking for weight loss in a pill, without having to actually make changes in your lifestyle, then you will probably be disappointed. Good health takes work. Once achieved however, it can be easy to maintain. I can show you how. We can determine if there are metabolic reasons for your weight problem, correct them, and get you on your way to a new and healthier you.

What you haven’t been told about vitamins

Tyler Wall - Thursday, November 25, 2010

By Bill Mathews, CNC, Kinesiologist, Reiki Master, Ki Center for Holistic Healing

“Oh I’ve tried the vitamins and natural stuff, but it doesn’t work”. I love hearing that from a new client because the road to understanding what is real and what is not when it comes to nutritional therapy, is a short one and easy to understand.

Let’s start with an example. Many people take vitamin C every day. But what they are really taking is Ascorbic Acid. You’ve all seen the label I’m sure and read that the content was ‘1000mg of vitamin c as ascorbic acid’. Seems pretty good you say but what you are actually getting is the anti-oxidant portion of the whole vitamin c complex. It’s like the banana peel on the banana. Vitamin c contains not only ascorbic acid but Tyrosinase, P factors, K factors, enzymes, co-enzymes, etc. If you were to take ascorbic acid to cure scurvy it would do nothing, but eat citrus fruit and it will heal quickly.

If you’re like me you don’t like to be misled especially about your health. Again using vitamin c as the example, a company will produce by chemical washing and high heat a chemical product that is almost identical to the ascorbic acid found in nature. So the vitamin company produces mass amounts of this chemical for pennies, maybe adding some new strawberry flavoring (a chemical) to it or even some dried desiccated rose hips to make it more appealing. If I go to buy something I expect to get what I pay for, not some phony imitation.

Real food is complex. It has so many different factors to it that it can’t even be completely identified by scientists. It would be incredibly expensive and, in fact probably impossible to recreate synthetically any supplement that would be identical to what is found in nature. Vitamin B products derived from coal tar are not the B complex. Alpha tocopherol alone is not vitamin E. I think you get the picture.

So what happens when we take a synthetic vitamin? Will it be beneficial at all?

To put it simply, when your body gets a synthetic vitamin and it kind of looks like food but it is missing parts to it, it will then go to its reserves if it has any, and put the missing pieces together with the fraction to make it whole and useable. This will deplete you system of even more nutrients in the long term. Most of the synthetic vitamins act like a mild toxin and will be eliminated by the body with very little being used. That is why you see such high concentrations on the label. But taking high doses of synthetic vitamins just adds more to the load your body has to deal with and has no real benefit in the long term. When you consider the fact that most prescription medications and over the counter medications rob the body of many vitamins and nutrients, you can see how deficiencies can escalate into disease and illness.

Fortunately there are supplements that are not chemicals. There is one company that I know of that makes a whole food supplement directly from food. No additives, no chemicals and processed cold to maintain all the factors necessary to be used by the body. When the body has the right tools it can heal permanently. This is what nature has intended.

When All Other Treatments Fail

Holistic Healing

A large percentage of people coming to this clinic are at their wits end. They have been through numerous traditional health care practitioners, and yet their disease or illness still persists. In addition, many have developed other problems due to the side effects of medications they have taken.

When, as a last resort, they decide to look at alternative medicine, they bring a healthy dose of skepticism with them. This is an ideal situation for an alternative health care professional.

As one of these professionals, I can honestly say, and with practical experience to back it up, that new hope can be found.

I spent eight years as an emergency medical technician. Traditional allopathic medicine has some of the best tools available to help people in specific situations. Where they fall short, in my opinion, is health maintenance, auto-immune problems and the understanding of how the body works holistically.

The scientific aspect of what they do is excellent. However, when it comes to “outside the box” thinking–how energy, structure, chemistry and emotions play a part synergistically—that is where they (and you) run into frustration and failure.

A phrase I hear quite often from my clients is, “I haven’t felt this good in years.” We are not performing miracles, nor do I heal anyone. You heal yourself. I just find the right tools that it takes to get you there. I look for imbalances in the body, find the tools it takes to correct those imbalances, and let your body do what it is designed to do.

Does this mean that everyone will be able to eliminate all disease and illness from their body? Of course not. Some people have so much long term damage that no amount of care will get them back to their youthful health and wellness. However, you can improve many areas of your health and be in the best possible condition for you, under the circumstances. Sometimes that may mean being in less pain, or simply being able to function better than you did before. Never the less, improvement in any form is a positive move in the right direction.

Whether you choose to explore acupuncture, chiropractic, nutrition, energy work or the various aspects of massage, they all have value, and can be helpful. The trick is to find that which will benefit, and not waste money and time. How that is determined is relatively straight forward. Using kinesthetic body analysis–which accurately identifies imbalances in the body– a plan of action can be established that will begin your return to health.

Chemical Imbalance

When I use supplementation or herbs to correct chemical imbalances, I want to make sure that whatever I am using is specific, and that it will get the job done. I use only Standard Process brand whole food supplements and Medi Herb herbal products from Australia. I have every confidence that these products work. I have seen them achieve amazing corrections consistently, and they are available only from health care professionals. But chemical imbalance is only part of the holistic picture.

An often misunderstood (or missed) piece of your health is that which encompasses the emotional aspect of health and healing. Rapid Eye Therapy is one tool we use in the clinic to regain the emotional balance that can be so critical to overall health. I don’t need to tell you how stress can affect you mentally. What you may not understand, however, is that stress affects your physical well being, too. An accurate quote is, “Where the mind goes the body follows.” There have been many occasions with my clients that an emotional problem has kept them from being completely successful in their healing. Once that issue was addressed, their recovery was accelerated.

Every part of your body works in synergy with each other. Ignoring, or missing part of the whole picture, can certainly cause otherwise good treatments to fail.
